Evan Shelby's Fort was erected on high ground about two blocks south in 1771 to protect pioneer settlers. Forces went from it to the battles of Point Pleasant, Long Island Flats, and Chickamauga Towns. It was also the site of the preliminary planning for the King's Mountain expedition, which culminated in the successful battle of Oct. 7, 1780.
