Big Bay State Park occupies 2,350 acres on Madeline Island, the largest of Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands. Known for sandstone bluffs and caves, a 1.5-mile sand beach, dunes, sphagnum bogs, and old-growth forest, it brings together striking shoreline scenery and diverse habitats. Bald eagles return annually to nest and raise their young. The park supports picnicking, camping, and more than 9 miles of trails, while winter visitors come to hunt, snowshoe, and ski cross-country. It is reached by ferry from Bayfield and a short drive across the island, and it is considered one of Wisconsin’s especially good places to view the Milky Way.
