Siege of Pueblo de Taos
Military
1
In early February 1847 at Taos Pueblo, U.S. forces under Colonel Sterling Price attacked the center of the Taos Revolt, an uprising against American rule in New Mexico during the Mexican-American War. After earlier victories at Cañada and Embudo Pass, Price crossed Taos Mountain in severe winter conditions and besieged the fortified pueblo. Artillery and assault finally forced entry on February 4 after intense fighting, and the remaining rebels surrendered the next day. The battle ended the revolt’s main phase and the last major fighting between American forces and insurgents in New Mexico, followed by harsh reprisals including executions of accused leaders.
