High Knob is a 2,388-foot peak in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, just east of Front Royal between Manassas Gap and Chester Gap. Straddling Warren and Fauquier counties, with its summit in Warren County, it is the highest point of the Blue Ridge north of Shenandoah National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses its eastern slope, connecting it to the range’s long north-south spine. Its commanding position above nearby gaps also gave it strategic military importance during the Battle of Wapping Heights in the Civil War. Although a gated housing development now occupies the summit and western slope, High Knob remains a prominent northern Blue Ridge landmark.
