North Eaglenest Mountain, a peak in the Plott Balsams of western North Carolina, rises west of Lake Junaluska and was once called Mount Junaluska. Its history is closely linked to the Eagle Nest Hotel, built there by S. C. Satterthwait in 1900 as a mountain resort reached by wagon road and known as one of only two hay fever resorts in western North Carolina. That era ended when fire destroyed the hotel in 1918, and plans to rebuild never happened. The mountain remained a scenic destination, later served by a briefly tolled scenic road, and is remembered today for both its prominence and its resort past.
