Near Wallace, Louisiana, Whitney Plantation Historic District preserves a former sugarcane plantation while centering the history and legacies of slavery that sustained Louisiana’s plantation economy. Founded in 1752 as Habitation Haydel, it became a major enterprise under the Haydel family and was renamed in 1866 by Bradish Johnson. Operations continued until 1975, and the property later became a museum opened in 2014 after a long restoration. Its significance combines rare surviving French Creole buildings, archaeological sites, and memorials and artworks focused on enslaved people, using scholarship and oral histories to interpret slavery as the foundation of plantation wealth and to emphasize remembrance, research, and public history.
