Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina spans 14,353 acres near Sparta in Alleghany and Wilkes counties. Its defining feature is Stone Mountain, a broad exposed granite dome that rises more than 600 feet above the surrounding land to 2,305 feet above sea level, making it visible for miles. Geologically significant as the state’s best example of a granite monadnock, it was named a National Natural Landmark in May 1974. The park is also known for rock climbing, brook trout fishing, waterfalls, lakes, forests, trails, and camping. It also preserves regional history through the Hutchinson Homestead, Garden Creek Baptist Church, and exhibits on mountain life and natural history.
