Pebble Beach Golf Links, opened in 1919 on California’s Monterey Peninsula, grew from the tourist landscape created around the Hotel del Monte resort and 17-Mile Drive. Designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant to bring play repeatedly to the rocky shoreline, it became renowned for both scenery and championship golf. Later revisions by H. Chandler Egan and others shaped the course further. Though public, it developed an unusually rich competitive history, hosting major amateur, professional, women’s, and U.S. Open events. Its six U.S. Opens, including Tiger Woods’s 15-shot victory in 2000, helped make it one of golf’s most famous and influential venues.
