St. Charles Seventh Day Adventist Church was organized in 1860 by the Schaupp brothers, Charles, Adolph, and Edward. The present building was built in 1862 at a cost of $2,500.00, and Oscar Burt laid its foundation. The original key, a large gold one, now hangs under glass in the foyer. The original bell was brought down the river by barge along with the old school bell, and it is rung each Sabbath morning to call members to worship. One third of the present membership are direct descendants of the Schaupp brothers who organized the church.
