Grant Tooker, one of the early settlers, recalled the first burials at Westport Cemetery. In the late fall of 1883, a man named Albright, who lived west of town, died of consumption and became the first person buried there after Grant Tooker’s father offered to dig the grave if a pick and shovel were furnished and others then came to help. A man named Austin, murdered just west of the county line in McPherson County, was the second buried there. A Mattt Gregory, thrown from a horse and left with a broken leg that failed to heal, was the third buried there. The site was later set aside as a place where descendants could add plaques honoring pioneer ancestors whose grave sites are unknown.
