Chinese Massacre Cove in Oregon’s Hells Canyon marks the site of the Hells Canyon Massacre of 1887, one of the deadliest anti-Chinese attacks in the American West. Chinese gold miners who had come upriver from Lewiston in 1886 established camps along the Snake River near Robinson Gulch, Deep Creek, and Salt Creek. In late May 1887, seven white men ambushed, robbed, and murdered as many as 34 miners, throwing bodies into the river. Although Frank Vaughn later confessed and implicated others, no one was convicted. The site was officially named in 2005, and later memorials and remembrance events brought overdue recognition to the crime and its victims.
