Around 1875, the first substantial home in Wheeler County was built across the creek from Hidetown, a buffalo hunter's post, for the first sheriff, Henry Fleming. Its rock was quarried nearby, and its ell contained four 14-foot-square rooms. Considered a mansion, it served the county until a courthouse could be built.
