Shaw Bridge in Claverack, New York, is a rare iron truss bridge built in 1870 by John D. Hutchinson of Troy using Squire Whipple’s bowstring truss design. Also known as the Double-Span Whipple Bowstring Truss Bridge, it is the only surviving double Whipple bowstring truss bridge in the United States, with two identical spans over a central limestone pier. Once part of the Albany Post Road, it continued serving local traffic after newer roads diverted through travel in 1931. Recognized in 1980 for its engineering and transportation significance, it is now closed because deterioration of its wooden deck made further use unsafe.
