Olana in Greenport, New York, was the home and estate of painter Frederic Edwin Church, who transformed a farm overlooking the Hudson River Valley into a unified work of art. Beginning with land he bought in 1860, Church and his wife, Isabel, developed the property over decades into a house, studio, designed landscape, and working farm. Their main house, created with architect Calvert Vaux after travels in Europe and the Middle East, became a notable example of Orientalist architecture. Preserved largely by the family and later protected by preservationists and New York State, Olana remains one of the nation’s few intact artist home, studio, and estate complexes.
