Exhausted from marching, fighting at Bladensburg, and invading Washington, British soldiers stopped to rest on Northampton Plantation property on August 26, 1814, before resuming their march to Upper Marlboro. By August 30, after the successful campaign for Washington, they reboarded their ships at Benedict, having traveled about 113 miles over 12 days. British Lt. George Robert Gleig recalled that it was absolutely necessary to pause and that after throwing themselves on the ground, in less than five minutes there was not a single unclosed eye throughout the whole brigade.
