St. Johns Light in Jacksonville, Florida, marks the mouth of the St. Johns River from Naval Station Mayport and continues a line of four lighthouses that have served this entrance since 1830. The site reflects the challenges of Mayport’s unstable shoreline, which caused earlier towers to be lost to water, hidden by dunes, or weakened by erosion. After the 1858 lighthouse was retired in 1929, a lightship served offshore until the present 1954 concrete tower replaced it. Automated in 1967, its twenty-two-mile light remains an active aid to navigation, while both the 1858 and 1954 structures have earned historic recognition.
