The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge carries U.S. Route 64 across the Rio Grande Gorge about 10 miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico. A steel deck arch bridge locally called the Gorge Bridge or High Bridge, it stands about 600 feet above the river and is generally ranked as the seventh-highest bridge in the United States. Built from 1963 to 1965 and dedicated on September 10, 1965, it became an important east-west highway link. Its striking design won a 1966 award from the American Institute of Steel Construction, and it later appeared in several films. A major restoration completed in September 2012 repaired steel and renewed the deck and pedestrian features.
