Canoe Creek State Park is a 961-acre Pennsylvania state park centered on 155-acre Canoe Lake near Canoe Creek and east of Altoona. Opened in 1979 during a broader expansion of the state park system, it combines recreation, wildlife habitat, and visible industrial history. The park preserves abandoned limestone quarries and the remains of a Blair Limestone Company limekiln on Pennsylvania’s Path of Progress. It is also notable for the Frank Felbaum Bat Sanctuary, which supports Pennsylvania’s largest nursery colony of little brown bats, and for a hibernaculum used by more than 30,000 bats of six species. Trails, fishing, boating, swimming, cabins, and picnic facilities make the lake-centered landscape a year-round destination.
