In the early 20th Century, massive schooners such as Hesper and Luther Little carried goods from the United States to destinations around the world. Hesper delivered coal to Lisbon, case oil to France, and brought fertilizer back to the U.S. from Venezuela. Luther Little traded in coal and lumber as far south as Haiti, and in 1918 her crew rescued two balloonists who had crashed in the Atlantic Ocean off the Delaware coast. As steam-powered ships saved time and money, the old schooner trade declined. In 1932, Hesper and Luther Little made their last voyage together by tugboat and came to rest in Wiscasset harbor. For another 60 years, the remains of these ships stood as landmarks along the Maine coastline and as points of pride for the people of Wiscasset.
