After Stonewall Jackson’s successful flank attack and his wounding on the night of May 2nd, Lee appointed Major General Jeb Stuart to command Jackson’s corps. With an imminent threat coming from the direction of Fredericksburg, Lee ordered Stuart to pin the Federals in place while Lee dealt with that danger. As Stuart drove the Federals back upon the river, sharp fighting in the woods and fields of Chancellorsville grew into a steady roar. Brigadier General Alfred Colquitt’s Georgia Brigade and Nicholls’ Louisiana Brigade were shifted from the far right to the far left of the Confederate line, and when ordered forward around 10:00 a.m., their troops again tried to turn the Federal flank. Instead they struck the Federal troops of Brigadier General Erasmus Tyler, and the fighting intensified.
