Harker Canyon
Industry
Harker Canyon in southeastern Tooele County, Utah, stretches along the south side of the Sheeprock Mountains within the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Once heavily worked for hard minerals, it still contains abandoned mines and the remains of a ghost town and mining works below its spring-fed creek. That mining past has also left lasting environmental problems: a January 2005 report found the highest heavy-metal concentrations in groundwater of any sampled area in the Sheeprock Mountains. Management of the old mines is shared through the Vernon Sheeprocks Project. Today, alongside that legacy, the canyon supports recreation and wildlife management, including bird watching and horseback riding.
