Along the ancient lakeshore at Dinosaur Lake, tracks show two sauropod dinosaurs walking side by side, and parallel tracks identified here in the 1930s led to the discovery that some types of dinosaurs lived in large herds like modern animals. Tracks of meat-eating dinosaurs radiate in all directions, indicating that carnivores roamed the lakeshore as solitary hunters. Although large carnivores are generally less common than large plant-eaters, roughly equal numbers of footprints occur at this site, raising the possibility that meat-eaters were faster and more active than plant-eaters. Some limestone layers show clear sauropod trackways, while others are heavily trampled with many overlapping footprints, and the large, rounded prints of these plant-eaters show that they generally lumbered west along the lakeshore, often in groups or herds.
