The Gustaf Anderson House is significant for its locally notable Italianate style and for its association with Gustaf Anderson, a prominent Chisago County settler and successful speculator. Its brick construction and local interpretation of the Italianate style make it distinctive in a county where the housing stock is dominated by simple frame vernacular structures. The residence reflects the status Gustaf Anderson achieved during his lifetime. He immigrated to Minnesota from Sweden in 1864, later engaged in gold speculation in Montana, eventually returned to farm in Chisago County, and in 1879 built this brick residence in Lindstrom for his retirement. The house represents the moderate degree of success achievable by settlers and speculators of the middle and late nineteenth century.
