George A. Bowlus started the Bank of Allen County, the second bank in Iola, on this block between South Street and Washington Avenue. He was one of several businessmen instrumental in paying for the trolley tracks that went around the square. He was also the father of Thomas Bowlus, for whom the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, two blocks east of here, was named.
