The Dallas Museum of Art, in downtown Dallas's Arts District, is one of the largest art museums in the United States, with extensive collections spanning from the third millennium BC to the present and a major research library. Founded in 1903 as the Dallas Art Association, it evolved through new names, a move to Fair Park, and a 1963 merger with the Dallas Museum of Contemporary Art. Under Jerry Bywaters, it expanded both its collections and its commitment to Texas art. Its current building opened in 1984, and the museum remains a leading cultural institution known for its broad holdings, major commissions, and continued growth and renewal.
