The M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, built by FMC Corporation and named after General Omar Bradley, first appeared in 1978 as a vehicle distinct from a true tank. It is powered by a Cummins 500 hp, V-8, Diesel engine with a supercharger and uses a General Electric transmission. The vehicle weighs approximately 49,000 pounds and is capable of more than 55 mph. Its armament consists of a Hughes M-242 25 mm Chain Gun and two TOW wire guided antitank missiles. Its crew consists of a driver, commander, gunner, and six infantry personnel. Its interior ammunition load was seven TOW or Dragon missiles, 900 rounds of 25 mm ammunition, 4,400 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, and 6,160 rounds of 5.56 ammunition. A rear ramp can be lowered quickly to let infantry exit with their weapons, and they can also fire from gun ports in the sides and rear. With a deployed water dam folded around it, the vehicle will float to cross small bodies of water. The Bradley remains in Army use, was used extensively in Desert Storm, and continues in service as the only Armored Cavalry Vehicle capable of keeping up with the M-1 Abrams Tank in the field.
