On a plateau above LaPrele Creek and the North Platte River, Major Dye chose the site for an Army post because he believed it was neither so low as to be seriously affected by rain or snow nor so high and unprotected as to suffer from winter winds, though that optimistic judgment did not hold up in the winter months. The site offers a glimpse into Army operations at this remote outpost and into the boom and bust of the post-military town of Fetterman. A cemetery with gravestones dating to the late 1800s lies less than a mile to the east.
