At Indian Springs, the Bethel Methodist Society was organized in 1768 by Rev. Geo. Whitefield and the families of Arnold, Giraud, Taylor, Sullivan, Mitchell, Box, and Wood. In 1825 it received the Methodist conference under Rev. Barnett Smith. A Sunday school was organized in 1842 with G.L. Riley, Elisha South, J.M. Eppes, Rev. John Humbert, and Judge T.J. Sullivan. From 1854 to 1884, camp meetings were organized by Rev. R.J. Boyd. In 1878, the first local foreign missionary society of the South Carolina Methodist Church was organized by Minerva Kinard Humbert. Those remembered include deceased ministers buried there, P.C. Battle, J.A. Hughes, C.H. Sullivan, R.L. Roundtree, and R.L. Roundtree, Jr.; Revolutionary War soldiers Wm. Arnold, Philip Gruber, Wm. Mitchell, David Giraud, and John South; Confederate soldiers Cpt. W.L. Wood, Cpt. J.B. Humbert, D.G. Humbert, W.D. Sullivan, John Sullivan, and J.K.
