In Plainfield and Joliet, Illinois, the Lincoln Highway and Route 66, described as the two longest highways in America, intersect, with the famous historic crossroads aligned for three blocks in the heart of downtown Plainfield. The Lincoln Highway also crosses the Dixie Highway, an important road to Miami, Florida, and Carl G. Fisher developed the idea of both the Lincoln Highway and the Dixie Highway. In Chicago Heights near the Indiana border, the Arche Memorial Fountain, built in 1916 with the image of Lincoln on a penny, marks the crossing of these highways. In 1926, Route 66 ran from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, as a collection of two-lane concrete or paved roads through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. John Steinbeck called Route 66 the "Mother Road" in The Grapes of Wrath. The Lincoln Highway also crosses the Great River Road in Fulton along the Mississippi River, a road known as America's north and south transcontinental highway extending from Minnesota to Louisiana.
