Men from Macon County, Tennessee served in the Confederate States Army during the war between the states from 1861 to 1865 as part of the Army of Tennessee, including the 2nd Tennessee Cavalry, 7th Tennessee Cavalry, 9th Tennessee Cavalry, 8th Tennessee Infantry, Company A, 20th Tennessee Infantry, 24th Tennessee Infantry, Company C, 28th Tennessee Infantry, Companies A and C, and 30th Tennessee Infantry. A tribute associated with Major General Benjamin Franklin Cheatam, corps commander in the Army of Tennessee, declared, “You will not brand them traitors. You who battled side by side. For Tennessee you fought and lived. For Tennessee they died.”
