Parish Church of St. John's Berkeley was founded by Act of Assembly on November 30, 1706. The church was erected in 1712. It burned in a forest fire in 1775 and was restored. It was burned by Col. Coates of the British Army in 1781 and again restored. It burned once more in a forest fire about 1886. Gen. William Moultrie and Henry Laurens were among the vestrymen of the parish.
