Howison Homestead was the home of Stephen Howison the Third, born in 1776 and died in 1862, and was associated with Stephen Howison the First, who lived from 1736 to 1815. In a reflection written in his later years, Stephen Howison the Third remembered the place as the home of his childhood, once his father's and later his own, with its sturdy oak-sheltered building, winding staircase, sliding westward window, yard, orchard, garden, spring, and surrounding woods and fields. He recalled his mother and father at their daily work, the hospitality his parents offered strangers and travelers, time spent with his siblings, and familiar features of the homestead including cherry, pear, oak, hickory, and pine trees, as well as the spring, brambles, and fields made by earlier generations. He also reflected on the graves there of his parents, relatives, neighbors, and ancestors, meditating on death, God's taking of souls, and his own mortality.
