Minuteman Missile National Historic Site

Near Wall, South Dakota, this preserved Cold War missile complex safeguards the last intact Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missile system in the United States, retained in a disarmed state as a record of the nuclear arms race and deterrence. Its key surviving elements, Delta One and Delta Nine, once formed part of a vast southwestern South Dakota missile field operated by the 44th Strategic Missile Wing. Built to endure a Soviet first strike, the missiles here remained on alert for nearly 30 years before removal under the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. The site endures as a rare, tangible reminder of Cold War scale, technology, and tension.
