Samford University is a multipurpose Christian university founded in 1841 as Howard College by Alabama Baptists at Marion. It moved to East Lake, Birmingham, in 1887 and was established on this campus in 1957. In 1961 it acquired Cumberland School of Law in Lebanon, Tennessee, and in 1965 the college was rechartered as Samford University in honor of Frank Park Samford and his family.
