Community Christian Church in Kansas City, Missouri, is a significant work of modern American architecture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for a Disciples of Christ congregation after its previous church burned in 1940. Built across Main Street from the Country Club Plaza, the church was designed around a parallelogram and introduced Wright’s idea of a “spire of light.” Construction costs forced a smaller auditorium and other changes, and the building was completed in 1942 without the light tower. That concept was finally realized in 1994 as the Steeple of Light, whose powerful beam remains a prominent feature of the Kansas City skyline.
