Brices Cross Roads in northeastern Mississippi preserves the crossroads where a smaller Confederate force under Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest defeated a larger U.S. Army force on June 10, 1864, one of the war’s sharpest Southern victories. Despite that result, the wider campaign helped secure Union supply lines between Nashville and Chattanooga. The federally protected site, established in 1929, is only one acre, but the surrounding landscape and Old Bethany Cemetery remain central to the battle’s story. More than 90 Confederate dead are buried there, while Union dead were later reinterred at Memphis National Cemetery. Local, private, and public efforts have preserved about 1,500 acres of the battlefield.
