The Dr. Lemuel Richards Home / La Demeure Dr. Lemuel Richards
Arundel, Maine · Kennebunk, Maine
History
1
Built in 1800 for William Taylor, this home was occupied by Taylor until 1815, when financial losses from the War of 1812 led him to sell it to hatters William Hackett and Timothy Frost. After a number of later occupants and the addition of older building sections, the home was sold in 1867 to Dr. Lemuel Richards, who practiced medicine locally and lived there with his family until his death in 1887. His daughter Helen remained there until her death in 1931. The home later passed through family members and is currently owned by a descendant of Dr. Richards, and its interior remains virtually unchanged since the 1870s.
