In 1954, Daytona Beach held three stock car races in February. On February 19, the 102.5-mile Sportsman Race was won by Dick Joslin in a ’39 Ford, followed by Joe Wolf in second and Gwyn Staley in third. On February 20, the 123-mile Modified-Sportsman Race was won by Cotton Owens in a ’38 Plymouth with a Chrysler engine, with Herb Thomas second and Earl Moss third; no separate record exists for modified versus sportsman. On February 21, the 159.9-mile Grand National Race was awarded to Lee Petty in a ’54 Chrysler, followed by Buck Baker in a ’53 Olds and Curtis Turner in a ’54 Olds, after Tim Flock, who finished first in a ’54 Olds, was disqualified.
