This fort was constructed on the basic plan of Captain John Augustus Sutter’s original fort, built in Sacramento one hundred years earlier. As a replica of one of the most outstanding landmarks for early California pioneers, it was undertaken in the same spirit attributed to its founder: the advancement of American civilization. It was constructed jointly by the Federal Works Agency Work Projects Administration and the County of Kern Board of Supervisors, with W.R. Woollomes as chairman, alongside C.W. Harty, Ralph Lavin, Stanley Abel, and Charles Wimmer, and with the Work Relief Department, H.R. Hubbard as director, and W. Francis Parsons as architect.
