During the Civil War, this site was known as a station on the so called Underground Railroad. The trail of enslaved people to Canada was broken by bringing them across the lake from Union Springs, an ardent abolition Quaker village. It was also the landing place of an Indian canoe ferry and of the first white man’s ferry.
