Bentonville Battlefield in North Carolina preserves the site of the Battle of Bentonville, fought March 19 to 21, 1865, in the final weeks of the Civil War. The largest Civil War battle in the state, it ended in Confederate defeat and badly weakened one of the South’s last major field armies under General Joseph E. Johnston, helping keep Union operations focused on finishing his remaining forces. The grounds include preserved terrain, visible Union and Confederate earthworks, the restored Harper House that served as a Union field hospital, museum exhibits, trails, and a driving tour. Ongoing preservation has made it a major place for understanding the war’s closing phase.
