Monroe County's veterans memorial is dedicated to all county residents who served the country and to the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice so that others might live free. It declares that freedom is not free and that willingness to sacrifice is the prelude to freedom, offering appreciation to the men and women whose loyalty and service in war and peace define the character of the nation and preserve its freedoms. It remembers those from Monroe County who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, and the Persian Gulf/Iraq conflict.
