The memorial honors the brave men who served their country during World Wars I and II and were members of the American Legion, John E. Flinn Post No. 419. The post occupied this site from 1939 to 1987, when the site and building were given to the First United Methodist Church of Taft, Texas. The site and building improvements were funded by the Colonel Oscar Wolfe Memorial Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Taft, Texas.
