Battleship Memorial Park on Mobile Bay in Mobile, Alabama, is a major state-owned military museum centered on the preserved World War II vessels USS Alabama and USS Drum, both National Historic Landmarks. The park grew from a statewide effort to save USS Alabama from scrapping in 1962, with citizens and Alabama schoolchildren helping fund her preservation. Awarded to Alabama in 1964, the battleship opened as a museum ship in 1965, and USS Drum joined the site in 1969. The collection later expanded to include aircraft, military vehicles, memorials, and a replica of CSS H. L. Hunley. Despite severe damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the park was repaired and continues to operate.
