At Alcove, New York, this site preserves the standing chimney and buried remains of the former Valley Paper Mill, a straw pulp paper mill whose surviving chimney dates to 1844. The tapered rectangular brick chimney measures 9.5 feet by 9.5 feet at the base and rises 110 feet. After the mill was destroyed by fire in 1891, the site was leveled and filled, but much of it remained undisturbed from the time of the fire. That preservation gives the place archaeological importance, while the isolated chimney endures as a rare and striking remnant of 19th-century paper manufacturing in the area.
