Born enslaved on Holme Hill Farm near here, Frederick Douglass spent his early childhood in Talbot County. He self-liberated from Baltimore in 1838 with assistance from his future wife, Anna Murray. Overcoming mind-body-soul-destroying obstacles, he became one of the greatest orators, writers, and philosophers in American history, as well as an extraordinary advocate for liberation, human rights, and universal suffrage. His legacy lives in all who fight for freedom and equality.
