The last toll gate house on the old Huntingdon, Cambria and Indiana Turnpike stood here. The pike, completed in 1820, was a main artery between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and was maintained by tolls collected at established points along the route. The house itself, built of logs in 1820, was destroyed by fire September 16, 1943. During the Civil War the toll gate was kept by Mrs. Eliza Jones, whose husband, Lieut. Hugh Jones of Co. C. 209th Regt. Penna. Vols., Army of the Potomac, was killed at the battle of Fort Steadman, Petersburg, VA., March 25, 1865, leaving the widow and six young children. Tolls were discontinued in 1870.
