On June 17th 1862, the First Wisconsin Cavalry, US, fought the 30th Arkansas Infantry and 6th Missouri Militia, CSA, in western Craighead County under Confederate General M. Jeff Thompson and US Colonel Edward Daniels. Federal forces bivouacked at Jonesboro learned of a Confederate camp west of Jonesboro and attacked, but the Confederate forces were ready for them. Low on ammunition, the Federals were ordered into a sabre charge by Captain Henry Harnden, driving the Confederates from the field. After the action, LTC Alex Waugh and Col. R. H. Paramore were captured by First Wisconsin Cavalry scout Ed Abbey, and ten Confederates were captured west of Cole Hill near Cache River Bridge. Other action followed in western Craighead County on May 5-9, 1864, when the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry was scouting for Confederates, and on May 10, 1865, Colonel Henry Harnden was with the forces that captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Irwinville, Georgia, helping end the Civil War.
