In 1936, Dr. Charles D. Johnson established a regional festival to foster the exchange of ideas between local amateur and professional writers. He invited English professors at colleges and universities in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee to participate, and nine schools accepted. The first meeting of the Southern Literary Festival was held here April 23, 1937.
