Fort Waverly was built by Union troops between 1863 and 1864 to protect a newly completed railroad line connecting the important Union supply depot on the Tennessee River at Johnsonville with Federally held Nashville, as Confederate guerillas posed constant threats to these transportation links. The Federal fortification stands on the rise before the site. The Humphreys County and Civil War Museum houses a collection reflecting the county's rich heritage, including items of local interest, prehistoric Native American artifacts, and a special collection interpreting the role of the Civil War in the county and surrounding area.
